I returned home today to this…

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogFireYikes!

The National Forrest Service is fire-wising the area directly behind our cabin.  You can read more about fire~wising at the National Fire Protection Associations website.  This process started with chain saws and building large piles spaced between the trees that were left.  This was done just before Christmas.  I know this only because the picture below was our Christmas card this year and you can see the piles in the background.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogFireHi Homer!

The timing today worked like this…I came home with a friend & around the bend and we could see smoke.  The smoke was coming from two areas.  As we approached the house it seemed to be only at our house.  All I could think about was Homer inside.  Thankfully as we got to the driveway we could see it was in the back.  The firemen {hot shots} were just lighting the piles directly behind our cabin and this happened to be where the flames were the highest.  I grab the garden hose anyway!

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogFire

The fireman {hot shot} reassured me that everything would be okay.  A bit smokey, but okay.  So I snapped up some marshmallows from the kitchen.  Not really.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogFire

This shows just how close to our cabin the piles were.  The flames have died down in this picture.  The metal top building is my workshop.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogFireMyGuy

Here’s “my guy” playing fireman {my hot shot to me!}  All the country girls know what hot shots are.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogFire

Here are piles burning.  Fire is a stimulating thing to watch.

Any ideas on how to get the smoke smell out of…hum… everything would be a great help.

I’m redoing the room at the top of our stairs that separates our guest rooms and turning it into a craft room.  This is the second step, budget and essentials.  You can read about the first step here.

The budget for this project is $300 low and $375 high.  Not a big budget so this will be a creative challenge.  The essentials needed for the space is storage and lots of it.  The room will be used for small “clean” crafts.  That means no sanding or cutting wood.  Check out the workshop series for the “dirty” crafts.

Here is a list of the items I would like to organize in the room:

  • Bottles of acrylic paint
  • Artist brushes
  • Scrapbook paper & other paper of various sizes
  • Ribbons
  • Cutting tools
  • Scrapbook elements {that maybe massive}
  • Books
  • Wrapping paper
  • Rubber stamps and supplies

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCraftRoom8

This is the room and as you can see the big cabinet on the left takes up most of the area.  It’s that big cabinet that I plan on reworking to fit the space better and handle most of the storage.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogPotteryBarnRoundBookcasePottery Barn Revolving Bookcase

I would love to get the Pottery Barn revolving bookcase, but it would blow the budget and then some.  Will think this one through.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogBookcase

Another idea would be a bookcase.  Could have something like this on each side of the balcony door.  I would paint it cream and recover books with an ombre effect {graduation of tone in a color} in the room color scheme.

A work surface is also needed.  I have a killer drafting table that “my guy” bought for me at a yard sale years ago.  Since we have been in the cabin I haven’t had a place to set it up.  Right now the top is used to cover Homer‘s crate and the bottom is in pieces under the bed in one of the guest rooms.  Awful!

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogDraftingBitsandPiecesAwesome knob on drafting table under the bed {disregard the Homer hair and dust bunnies!}

If you have ideas or notice something I’m missing…please let me know.  And remember to follow along with the craft room redo.  The next step will get into color scheme, inspirations and design ideas.

House Beautiful has an article on Trompe l’oeil wallpaper in their current green issue.

Trompe l’oeil is French for “deceive the eye.”  It looks realistic.

We have one of those awkward rooms areas in our home that’s hard to figure out what to do with.

I know all rooms areas need to have a purpose.  It’s purpose has been the landing at the top of the stairs, or how you get into the two guest rooms, or what you walk through to get to the balcony.

Now the time has come to define the room area.  Craft ROOM!  It’ll no longer be an area.  I will follow my 9 simple steps.

Below is the floor plan, move you mouse over the drawing to see the computer version.

Below are pictures of the area room.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCraftRoom3From the balcony door looking to the staircase.  The room is light due to the window in the staircase and the balcony door.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCraftRoom2This wall has a display of our vacation pictures.  I like the display and may keep it in this location…humm???

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCraftRoom5This chair may find another location.  The huge cabinet on the right is “the box”…really.  It says so on the back!  I made this cabinet 13 1/2 years ago to hide one of those giant TVs.  I has not held a TV for the last 9 years.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCraftRoom4Being honest this is the inside of “the box,” for the last 9 years it’s held junk!

Here an old grainy picture of “the box” when it housed the giant TV.  Move you mouse over the picture to see “the box” with the doors open.

I’m adding so many pictures of “the box” cause I plan to rework it to hold craft supplies.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCraftRoom1Looking through the balcony door to the Mazatzal Mountains…or as they call them around here “mad as H – E – double toothpicks.”

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogLaundryroomCabinetThis is currently the craft storage in the laundry room.  Just too much stuff and too much laundry.

Follow along with the next step, budget…yuck!

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogWoodScrapHearts

I made several of these using bits of leftover scrap wood trims and pieces a couple of years ago.

This year I made ONE for a lucky reader.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogScrapHeart

Here’s a quick run down of the process.  First I cut out a heart shape from a broken table, chair seat, dresser top or whatever I get my hands on and can save from going to the landfill.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogScrapHeartBackPicture of the back of the heart…which is the top of the table

This one is from a table. I added a cream ribbon through hole I drilled at the top.  I placed the ribbon first to come out the back so the heart can be set on a mantle or shelf if you don’t want to hang it.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogScrapHeartWithRibbon

Next I gather up scrap pieces of trim and start using my Elmer’s wood glue and teeny tiny brad nails to fit the trim onto the heart.  It’s kinda like putting together a puzzle except you can cut the pieces to fit!  Thin pieces can be cut with tin snips, thicker pieces use a jig saw with a scroll blade.  I like to apply the trim vertical.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogScrapHeartwithWood

I kept fitting, cutting, gluing, and nailing until the heart was completely covered.

Next I used Briwax to lightly go over the high areas of trim.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogScrapHeartWithBriwax

Now for two coats of paint.  I used Colorplace Apple Red.

Then I applied a Walnut colored glaze that I wiped off the high areas letting it settle into the crevices.

A light sanding and it’s done.  The size is 8 1/2″ High by 9 3/4″ wide and will arrive with a vintage styled valentine.

I love my cast iron skillets.

They are seasoned perfectly and clean as easily as a brand new non~stick skillet.

I season them by rubbing inside and out with shortening.  Place upside down on a cookie sheet with sides.  Put in a 200 degree oven for 4 hours.  Let cool and wipe the pan with paper towels.

To clean I use a very, very small amount of dish soap {pea size amount} and hot water.  Rinse and dry with paper towel then spray with small amount of cooking spray or wipe with dime amount of shortening.

Now for Cast Iron Green Beans

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCastIronGreenBeans

Heat the skillet.  Add a tablespoon of olive oil and a pat of butter {I use unsalted.}  Add rings of white or yellow onion, salt and pepper the rings.  Let brown slightly.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCastIronGreenBeans

Next add the green beans, above I used canned green beans {drained} but fresh is awesome in cast iron too.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCastIronGreenBeans

Let the beans brown lightly and add a fresh crushed garlic clove.

HomaStyleDecoratingBlogCastIronGreenBeans

Top with a sprinkling of French fried onions.  Serve Hot.

Yum!
